Who can use The Known

You must be 16 or older. You’re responsible for keeping your password safe and for what happens on your account. Tell us right away if you think someone else has got into it.

Your stories are yours

You own what you record and write, and the chapters and write-ups made from it. We don’t claim any ownership of your stories.

To run The Known, you give us permission to store, copy, process and display your stories. That covers sending them to the AI companies named in our Privacy Policywhen you’ve turned AI help on, and showing them to the people you choose to share with. This permission exists only to provide The Known to you. It ends when you delete your stories or your account, except for copies the people you shared with have already received.

You confirm that you have the right to share what you upload, including any recordings of other people’s voices.

AI help

Transcripts, chapters, write-ups and Sage’s questions are produced by AI and can contain mistakes. They’re a starting point for your story, not a statement of fact. Review anything before you rely on it or share it.

Sharing and contributions

You decide who sees each story. Once you share something, the person you shared it with has seen it, and we can’t take that back, even if you stop sharing later. When you ask someone to record for you, you review what they send before it joins your stories, and they keep the rights to their own recording.

Community standards

The Known is a place for personal and family stories. We have no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behavior. You agree not to use The Known to:

• harass, threaten, bully or intimidate anyone;
• share hateful, sexually explicit or violent content, or content that exploits or endangers children;
• share private information about someone in order to hurt or embarrass them;
• upload content you don’t have the right to share, or impersonate someone else;
• break the law, send spam, or try to break into accounts or our systems.

You can report a story shared with you, and block anyone who shares with you, from inside the app. We review reports promptly. If content breaks these terms, we may remove it, and we may suspend or close the account responsible.

Our service

We’re building The Known carefully, and features will change as we go, especially during the beta. We work hard to keep your stories safe and available, but we can’t promise the service will always be uninterrupted or error-free. The Known is currently free. If we introduce paid plans, we’ll tell you first, and you’ll choose whether to pay.

Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in Settings, as described in our Privacy Policy. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts others at risk. Where we reasonably can, we’ll tell you why.

Disclaimers and limits

To the extent the law allows, The Known is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, and we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for loss of data, arising from your use of The Known. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the past twelve months or US$50. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.

The App Store

These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple isn’t responsible for The Known or its content, and has no obligation to provide support for it. Apple’s standard licence agreement for apps also applies to your use of the app on Apple devices.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you live in a country that gives you the right to bring claims in your local courts, nothing here takes that away.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we’ll update the date at the top and, for meaningful changes, tell you in the app before they take effect. If you keep using The Known after that, you accept the new terms.
